Avalon
The neighborhood of Avalon is located in the city of Wilmington, Delaware. It is in the northeastern section of New Castle County. Other communities and neighborhoods that share a border include Newport, Stanton, Marshallton, Woodland Park, and Elsmere. Newport Gap Pike and DE 141 are the main thoroughfares, along with Old Capitol Trail and Centerville Road.
History
Just north of Kirkwood Highway is the historical Greenbank Mills & Philips Farm. The first mill was established in 1677 and referred to as the Swede’s Mill. A gristmill was the next to be constructed on Red Clay Creek. Unfortunately, the industry declined following the Revolutionary War, and the mill was sold off during an auction. Robert Philips purchased the mill, and with the help of inventor Oliver Evans, they devised a network of automated milling systems known as the Evans’ milling system. The mills and factories have been restored to help tell the history of the textile machinery used during the 19th century.
In 1867, the Wilmington & Western Railroad was used to transport goods from the mills to the ports of Wilmington. The railroad began transporting passengers in 1872. Steam and diesel trains still operate along a ten-mile track. Many use its historical backdrop as a venue for weddings, family reunions, and other events.
Neighborhood
In the northern region of the neighborhood is the convenient Prices Corner Shopping Center. This plaza provides several options for the residents, including stores such as:

Education
Residents can send their children to public schools within the Red Clay Consolidated School District. These include the following:
- Marbrook Elementary School – located on Centerville Road
- DuPont (Alexis I.) Middle School – located on Kennett Pike
- McKean (Thomas) High School – located on McKennan’s Church Road
The New Castle County Vocational-Technical School is just a short drive away for those seeking an alternative education. The technical school offers many different career-driven programs that prepare students with on-the-job training.
