Newport Gap Pike and DE 141 are the main thoroughfares, along with Old Capitol Trail and Centerville Road.
Just north of Kirkwood Highway is the historical Greenbank Mills & Philips Farm. The first mill was established in 1677 and referred to as the Swede’s Mill. A gristmill was the next to be constructed on Red Clay Creek. Unfortunately, the industry declined following the Revolutionary War, and the mill was sold off during an auction. Robert Philips purchased the mill, and with the help of inventor Oliver Evans, they devised a network of automated milling systems known as the Evans’ milling system. The mills and factories have been restored to help tell the history of the textile machinery used during the 19th century.
In 1867, the Wilmington & Western Railroad was used to transport goods from the mills to the ports of Wilmington. The railroad began transporting passengers in 1872.
