The Palmer School of Chiropractic
The Palmer School of Chiropractic was established in 1887 by Daniel David Palmer. Palmer, who previously practiced magnetic healing, was inspired to invent the name “chiropractic” and to begin practicing medicine involving the musculoskeletal system after a random encounter with a janitor.
Two years before opening the school, Palmer was working in his office when a janitor came in to clean his office. Palmer made an adjustment to the man’s spine, seeking to realign it in what he thought was the proper position. The janitor reported feeling immediate relief and Palmer’s interest in spinal manipulation was sparked.
A few decades after the school opened, Kansas became the first state to officially recognize chiropractic care as a form of medicine. The rest of the U.S. soon followed and today, there are 7,000 licensed chiropractors throughout the country.
