Daniel David Palmer & The Palmer School Of Chiropractic
Daniel David Palmer was working as a magnetic healer when he became interested in the musculoskeletal system and how issues with this structure could impact a patient’s overall health. While in his office, Palmer noticed that his janitor had a knot near his spine. He asked the janitor about the knot and was told that while lifting an object years before, the man had felt a pop. Since that time, the janitor had experienced back pain. He had also lost most of his hearing.
Palmer used pressure and movement to do a spinal adjustment and was able to alleviate the man’s pain. A few days later, Palmer claimed that the janitor also reported that his hearing had been restored.
Two years after this encounter, in 1887, Palmer opened the Palmer School of Chiropractic. Several years later, the first states recognized chiropractic care as a form of medicine and required a license for any practitioners.
Today more than 7,000 doctors of chiropractic medicine provide services to patients throughout the country.
