History

Archeologists believed that the earliest inhabitants of the greater area entered between 10,000 and 14,000 years ago. Along the river and the coastal edge, many different indigenous cultures established seasonal fishing villages. The coastal Natives along the Atlantic Coast were members of the Algonquian-speaking tribes.

When the Europeans arrived, the most prominent tribes were the Lenni Lenape Native Americans, known as the Delaware Indians. In the cooler months, they had many settlements near the coast to quickly harvest fish, oysters, and other shellfish. In the warmer months, Native women planted crops and processed the food that was caught. Men would hunt deer and small mammals because the larger game could only be found more inland.
