The unincorporated community of Hardscrabble is situated in Sussex County, Delaware. The neighborhood shares its borders with Woodcrest Estates, Gum Crossroads, Wooded Acres, and Pusy Crossroads. It is southwest of Georgetown by 7.4 miles taking U.S. 9 West, also known as West Market Street. Some other roadways in the area include Concord Road, Josephs Road, Asbury Road, Beaver Dam Branch Road, and Messick Road.
History
The name of the community stems from the 1700s term for a fight that took place at the intersection of Sussex 473 and Sussex 446 between two Irish men. Although the fight ended without a winner, the battle continued. A store was constructed at the location by Garrison Messick in 1895, and the two men would compete to see who could put the other into the flour barrel by the end of the night each Saturday. Creston and Ashua Messick tore the store down in 1940, but a historical marker commemorates the battle between the two men.
Neighborhood
The community is the home of the Nothing Better eatery. The family-owned and operated eatery was founded in 2014. In 2015, they added a food truck and have since won 2nd place for their menu.
