Welshire

The unincorporated community of Welshire is situated in the northeastern section of Wilmington in New Castle County in the state of Delaware. The neighborhood is located in the Brandywine Hundred that is made up of north and northeast sections of Wilmington. The Shipley Road and Baynard Boulevard intersection is the center of the neighborhood.  Shellpot Creek flows along the eastern edge, separating it from the Carrcroft community. Gristmill Woods is to its south, and Wickwood is to its north.

History

An early settler in the area was Valentine Hollingsworth, an Irishmen born in County Armagh, Ireland, in 1632. After being influenced by George Fox, one of the original founders of the Religious Society of Friends, Hollingsworth became a Quaker. He was fined for his absence at the services at the Church of Ireland and even had his grain supply confiscated. Along with his family, he boarded the Antelope and sailed to America. When he arrived in 1682, he was granted 968 acres by William Penn in the area between Blue Ball and Shellpot Creek.

Original meetings were held at the houses of the Quakers, but Hollingsworth understood the need for a meetinghouse and donated a portion of his land for its construction. The area is now the Newark Union Burial Ground, where Hollingsworth was also buried after his death in 1710. A monument was erected to honor his contribution to the community. The church was a Quaker meetinghouse until 1754 and converted into a Methodist Episcopal church in 1845. The four-acre cemetery has as many as 950 graves, of which seven were men that fought during the American Revolutionary War.  Some of the other early settlers that were buried there include:

  • William Forwood
  • Richard G. Hanby
  • John F. Sharpley
  • William Talley

Neighborhood

The community is also home to the Mary Campbell Center, a center that serves as a residential facility for people with disabilities, mainly young adults. Chuck and Charm Welch founded the facility due to a need for support for their own disabled daughter, Charmie. As their daughter’s care was increasing, they knew they would eventually be unable to continue by themselves. In 1969, they formed a non-profit and were joined by several of their friends, one of which was Amos Campbell, whose own daughter had Down Syndrome. Campbell donated a portion of his farmland for the facility to be constructed. The center is named after Campbell’s wife, and it opened in 1976.

Another historic structure within the community is the Immaculate Heart of Mary School, which opened in 1957. The Sisters of Saint Joseph established the school to fulfill the community’s needs and currently serves as many as 500 students.
