Established in 1963 with over 10,000 square feet of refuge, Prime Hook Refuge remains a safe-haven for a diverse amount of wildlife in Delaware. The Refuge was created by the Migratory Bird Conservation Act “for use as an inviolate sanctuary, or for any other management purpose, for migratory birds.”

It is located west of Delaware Bay, about 20 miles away from Dover, Delaware, and serves as a critical layover for migratory birds that travel up and down the Atlantic Flyway. The refuge provides a safe breeding ground and rest area for an extensive list of threatened and endangered species of birds both federally and state-wide.

Prime Hook habitat consists of a salt and freshwater marsh, several ponds, wooded swamplands, grasslands, and forests. The habitat is home to over 308 species of birds, 51 species of fish, 45 different reptiles and amphibians, 37 mammals, and a plethora of insects.
