Staytonville

The unincorporated community of Staytonville is located in the northern region of Sussex County in the state of Delaware. The town center is located at the intersection of Staytonville Road, Memory Road, and Delaware Route 36, also known as Shawnee Road. The nearby towns are Hickory Ridge, Lincoln, Sussex Woods, Williamsville, Abbots Mill, and Freeman Corner. The Kent-Sussex Line Branch forms the community’s western border as the Johnson Branch helps create the eastern.

History

In 1851 the area passed an act to change the area’s name from Teatown to Staytonville. Named after the Staton family that moved to the state in 1666 from Stratford on Avon, Warwickshire, England. John Staton and his wife Anne came over first, and following the Revolutionary War, more family members came over. The area was known as Statonville until it was changed in order for the many Irishmen and Scotsmen from mispronouncing it as Statton. Many of the Staton family members are buried at the cemetery in the community.
