Located along the Christina River and on the edge of the R. W. Peterson Urban Wildlife Refuge, DuPont Environmental Education Center, AKA the DEEC, is where the city, river, and marsh meet. Moreover, it is where many of Wilmington’s residents head to when they want to enjoy the beautiful nature surrounding their city, whether by jogging, biking, or through a simple bicycle ride. Below, we offer some more specific information on this Delaware landmark.

The DuPont Center in Wilmington

Founded in 1964, Delaware Nature Society has been a leading environmental nonprofit organization in the region, working to protect the environment and connect people to nature for more than half a century. In 2009, they progressed their efforts with the inauguration of programs at the DuPont Environmental Education Center at the Russell W. Peterson Urban Wildlife Refuge, a 212 acre refuge of freshwater marsh next to the Christina River.

The Riverfront Development Corporation of Delaware (RDC) restored the marsh within the Urban Wildlife Refuge as part of its goal of reclaiming the long forgotten land along the Christina River.  Indeed, the RDC worked for the last 23 years to transform an industrial wasteland into a thriving destination rich in history and filled with recreational, cultural, retail and culinary attractions.

The centerpiece of the Peterson Refuge is the DuPont Environmental Education Center, which the RDC built 10 years ago and continues to operate under a partnership agreement with the Delaware Nature Society (DNS). A state of the art four-story, 13,500-square-foot facility  owned by the Riverfront Development Corporation of Delaware is operated by the Delaware Nature Society. It is located on the edge of the 212-acre Peterson Refuge on the tidal Christina River, where the city, river and marsh meet.DNS provides high quality, interactive environmental programming to thousands of visitors each year.

The Education Center showcases the many species of birds, fish, reptiles, plants and more that make their home in the refuge. Visitors are able to explore the interactive exhibits, join a guided tour, or participate in a variety of free and low-cost programs for persons of all ages.

The DuPont Environmental Education Center is accessible by river taxi, riverwalk, DART trolley and car. Free parking is available on site and in several Riverfront parking lots located at the end of Justison Street, south of Frawley Stadium. The riverwalk also connects to the pedestrian bridge that leads to the facility.

Continued Improvements at the DEEC

In September of 2018, the Jack A. Markell Bike Trail was opened, connecting the DuPont Environmental Center to Historic New Castle.
