History

The earlier settlers, the Lenape Native Americans, were led by Sachem Mattahorn at the time that Henry Hudson sailed up the Len-api Hanna in 1609. At that time, it was called Maax-waas Unk or Bear Place, in reference to the Maax-waas Hanna, or Bear River, that flowed by the Christina River. The Bear River was named after the Bear People, the tribe now known as the People of Conestoga or the Susquehannocks.

Neighborhood

The Banning Regional Park, located on Middleboro Road, includes two wetlands surrounding Lewis Pond and Folly Pond. It is a popular park for fishing, in addition to offering the following amenities:

Education

The community has many school options for the children to attend. Most are within the Red Clay Consolidated School District. Some of these include:

Additionally, the community is home to the science magnet school, Conrad Schools of Science, on Jackson Avenue. The school opened in 1936 and has an attendance of 1,500 students each year.
