Whitehall Landing is a community within the eastern region of Kent County in the state of Delaware. The communities Leipsic and Whitehall Crossroads are to the west of the area. History

The area was known to the Native Americans as Canaresse, which meant at the thickets. The name Bombay Hook came from the Dutch settlers. The wetlands area was sold to an early Dutch settler by the name of Peter Bayard in 1679. They exchanged the following for the land:

  • four handfuls of powder
  • three waistcoats
  • one anker of liquor
  • one kettle

Geographical Features

The Bombay Hook National Wildlife Refuge that takes up the majority of the area was established in 1937. The refuge has been home to approximately 35 mammal species such as:

  • cottontail rabbit
  • woodchuck
  • gray squirrel
  • red fox
  • white-tailed deer

As many as 350 species of birds have been spotted in the area. Some of these include:

  • bald eagles
  • ducks
  • geese

Neighborhood

The area offers the community a 12-mile auto tour of the refuge. In addition, there are many other activities such as:

  • hiking – such as the Bear Swamp Trail
  • photography – three 30-foot observation towers provide ample views
  • wildlife observation
  • hunting – regulations are in place for hunting of waterfowl and deer
