The town of Bellefonte is situated in the northwestern region of New Castle County in the state of Delaware. The town covers 115.2 acres and is less than 2 miles from the Delaware River. History

The town was established during the early 1900s and was initially known as Montrose. There were three neighborhoods within the town:

  • Montrose
  • Montrose Terrace
  • Montrose Terrace Addition

By 1916, the community was home to 16 homes, of which two were farms, and two operated small stores. These stores carried the staples such as:

  • bread
  • milk
  • eggs

One of the first main grocery stores was owned by Mr. Kincaid and Mr. Clark on Fifth and King Streets. At the beginning of each week, Mr. Kincaid would take the motor van in the town and get orders from the residents. He would deliver the orders each Saturday. There were frequent deliveries made by horse and wagon, including deliveries from:

  • the milkman
  • the coalman
  • the iceman
  • the laundryman
  • the mailman

Neighborhood

Within the community is the Brandywine Hundred Fire Company, Station 11. The fire department was established in 1924 after several residents held a meeting. The residents were concerned with the increase in local fires and the town’s lack of fire equipment. Many of the first volunteers were residents that worked for the paid City of Wilmington fire company. The department is now located on Brandywine Boulevard.

The town is home to many specialty shops and retail stores. Some of these include:

  • Eclectica – a gift shop
  • Bellefonte Vintage – an antique shop
  • Sue Ellen’s – a boutique shop
  • Bellefonte Arts – a craft and art shop

Education

The Brandywine School District handles the town’s public education. Children can attend the following public schools:

  • Mount Pleasant Elementary School – grades: K-5 – located on Duncan Road
  • Pierre S. DuPont Middle School – grades: 6-8 – located on West 34th Street
  • Mount Pleasant High School – grades: 9-12 – located on Washington Street

Demographics

The town had 1,249 residents that formed 537 households and 325 families in 2000. The racial demographics of the townspeople included the following:

  • 95.92% White
  • 2.40% African American

  • 0.56% from other races
