Pennyhill is the east, Bellefonte to the north, and Landlith to the south.

History

The community was founded as a village in 1871 by the Edgemoor Iron Company. The company was established in 1869 by William Sellers and Eli Garrett. Sellers was a mechanical engineer from Philadelphia. They manufactured steel and iron bridges. Some of their most known works include:

  • the Brooklyn Bridge deck
  • the Rockville Bridge over the Susquehanna River
  • the Kentucky River Bridge of the Cincinnati Southern Railroad

In 1882, the company began adding its own rolling mill to produce larger works. However, the economic stresses of 1880 to 1890s delayed its completion. It would not be done until 1897, and by this time, the factory was suffering financially. It was forced to sell in 1900 to the American Bridge Company. It finally closed its doors in 1925 and liquidated in 1936.

Historical Landmark

The community is home to the Marcus Hook Range Rear Lighthouse, a historical landmark located on Lighthouse Road. Despite being located approximately 100 yards from the shore, it is clearly seen. It is one of the highest lights located on the Atlantic Coast within the country. It stands 105 feet and was constructed using nine sections of reinforced concrete. Construction began in 1918 to replace the temporary structure of a light affixed to a post. On the property is a house, formerly the keeper’s house that the Coast Guard occupied until 2004. The property and lighthouse were sold in 2010 to a private owner. Although it is still used as an aid for navigation, the light has been turned off for a few years.
