Dewey Beach

This coastal town is incorporated and located in the eastern region of Sussex County in the state of Delaware. The 211.2-acre community is situated between Rehoboth Bay and the Atlantic Ocean. It measures approximately two blocks across and one mile long. Rehoboth Beach is its neighbor to the north, just past Silver Lakes Shores. History

Originally the area was called Rehoboth City, as it appeared on a map in Beer’s Atlas of Delaware in 1868. Historians believe that the name change transpired sometime right after the 1898 Battle of Manilla, at the end of the Spanish-American War. Admiral George Dewey led the United States Navy in the victory during the battle. The town’s name was in honor of his rank and time served in the Navy from 1900 until he died in 1917.
