Rehoboth Beach

The city of Rehoboth Beach is located along the Atlantic Coast in the eastern region of Sussex County, Delaware. The neighboring communities include Henlopen Acres, West Rehoboth, Spring Lake, Silver Lake Shores, and North Shores. This 1,049.6-acres coastal town is part of the growing Cape Region. The neighborhood sits at sea level and contains 0.47 square miles of water, such as the Rehoboth Canal that forms the town’s western edge.

History

It is said that the sea levels were much lower centuries ago and that the coast was 30 miles more to the east. However, when the Europeans settled in during the 17th century, the coastal lines were the same as they are today. The Lenape Native Americans, also known as the Delaware Indians, were residing in the area when the English and Dutch arrived, along with other tribes, such as:

  • the Sikkonese
  • the Assateague
  • the Nanticoke

The town was founded as the Rehoboth Beach Camp Meeting Association in 1873 under the direction of Rev. Robert W. Todd. Yet, the association dissolved by 1881. In 1891 the town was incorporated as Cape Henlopen City by the General Assembly of Delaware but was renamed Rehoboth Beach in 1893.

Located on Christian Street, more inland in the neighborhood is the historical Anna Hazzard Museum. Anna Hazzard was a Women’s Christian Temperance Union member and the first woman to get a real estate license in the state. The building dates back to the days of the camp meetings during the 1890s, although it originally stood on Rehoboth Avenue before being moved to its current location.

Tourism

The town is often referred to as the Nation’s Summer Capital due to the masses that flock to it in the summer. Several well-known politicians from Washington DC have summer homes in the neighborhood, including the 46th President of the United States, Joe Biden, along with his wife, Jill Biden.

The town hosts many festivals throughout the year, including the following:
